1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup butter or margarine (softened)
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Orange sugar (see Notes)
Frosting (recipe below)
Frosting Ingredients:
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons half-and-half (approx.)
Beat powdered sugar and butter in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with spoon. Stir in orange peel, vanilla and egg. Stir in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Cover and refrigerate about 1 hour or until firm. Heat oven to 375º. Roll half of dough at a time 1/8″ thick on lightly floured surface. Cut into 3″ rounds; cut rounds in half. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with orange sugar. Bake 7 – 8 minutes or until light brown. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely. Place Frosting in decorating bag with #3 writing tip. Pipe on cookies to outline orange segments.
Frosting Directions:
Mix all ingredients until smooth and spreadable.
